The Valley of the Saints (Vallée des
Saints) -
Boudes has another surprise for the walker. Near the village
on the colder hillside at the opposite of the vines, water
has sculpted pyramids of a height varying from 33ft (10m)
to 100ft (30m). They are the chimneys of the fairies (cheminées
des fées) made of red clay and resulting from the stone erosion
during the tertiary. If you have a bit of imagination, these
giant sentries will suggest a procession of monks, this is
why the valley bears this name.
A small hike in the Far West -
In order to discover the Valley of the Saints, one of the
most surprising sites of Auvergne, you only have to follow
the streams that are still eroding the feet of the columns.
Then, following the footpaths a bit further, you will reach
a crest which offers an astonishing view over these stone
giants. It is a sensation close to the site of the "Provençal
Colorado", these famous ochre quarries of the Luberon.
