The Basilica of Orcival, pearl of the
Mont-Dore - Nested in the beautiful Sioulot valley
(vallée du Sioulot), the village of Orcival and its andesite
and lauze houses surrounding its Romanesque Basilica, will
delight you. Built during the 12th century, this jewel
of Romanesque architecture is one of the five major basilicas
of Auvergne. Built with volcanic stones near the mountain
where they came from and the river that had to be diverted
for it, the Basilica offers the eye its architectural purity
and its rigorous design. As the pilgrims of olden times,
come to admire its archaic crypt, its richly decorated
capital and its famous Virgin with its beautifully crafted
ornaments, according to the legend, it was sculpted by
Saint-Luke himself.

The Tuilière and Sanadoire rocks, a
geological curiosity - The tour of the Tuilière
and Sanadoire rocks (roches Tuilières et Sanadoire), in
the heart of the Sancy massif, is unmissable if you like
walking at high altitudes and wide-open horizons. In a
still wild environment, you climb up to 4250ft (1288m)
and admire a listed site made of 2 rocky peaks enclosing
and guarding the valley as sentries. This surprising site
was watched over by a castle until the 15th century and
was a former lauze quarry but it is above all a testimony
of the volcanic activity that shook the region. Here, nature
performs wonders.
