   MASSIF CENTRAL > ALLIER > Zone 4

A boiling town - Water has made its way in the Allier. In Néris-les-Bains, in the heart of the valley of Montluçon, water is in the shape of hot abundant springs and it is exploited since the Antiquity. As for Evaux-les-Bains, its neighbour of the Combrailles, this spa resort, one of the oldest on the Road of the Water Towns of the Massif Central (Route des Villes d’Eau du Massif Central), combines the modernity of its public baths with the forefront of the technology and the exotism of the former spa resorts. Patients taking the waters will appreciate the relaxing way of life as the other water features such as the tropical aquarium, one of the major touristic attractions of the town.

Néris the exotic - In Néris-les-Bains, many civilisations are present. Starting from the park of the arena, which takes on the exact shape of the antic amphitheatre and suggests with force the majestic Gallo-Roman town, the guided tour will lead you to the heart of the medieval history of Néris inhabitants through the discovery of the Romanesque church and the Merovingian necropolis. Echoes of a more recent era, listed public baths, casino and hotel with precious facades, as well as made-up footpaths evocate lavish time of the upper class patients of the 19th century. An atmosphere beyond compare to enjoy in the shade of the lime trees.

From Néris to Montluçon - Near the former train station of Néris-les-Bains, a rose granite building with a multicoloured roof designed by Louis Brachet, there was formerly a railroad that linked Néris with Montluçon. Even if this road has not experienced the expected success, as it only ran from 1931 to 1939, the road is nowadays a real pleasure for walkers. Along a 3.75 miles (6km) route, the ancient railroad, that has been turned into a pedestrian road offers magnificent landscapes that you can admire from the top of the 3 viaducts that are built above the countryside of Montluçon.

A place for active tourists - Located in a preserved natural environment on the foothills of the Massif Central, the town of Néris is the starting point to cross on foot, on cycle or on horse the numerous bushy paths of the green plateau of the Combrailles. The hidden paths, twisting paths and the crowd of streams will lead you to spectacular spots such as the imposing ruins of the Château de l’Ours, which overhangs the gorges of the Cher.
