The Romanesque heritage -
The most beautiful buildings of the Romanesque art of Auvergne are located in the small Sumène-Artense villages. These churches and chapels are listed historical buildings, characterised by their refined and rugged lines. In Ydes, in the canton of Saignes, the Saint-Georges' church, erected by the Templars, is a remarkable example of this architectural style. By following the guided tour of the illuminated churches proposed by the Union of Communes of the Sumène-Artense, visitors will discover, after dark, these magnificent places full of history.
The way to go -
A good way to follow is certainly the one that leads you to the heart of this region where beeches and conifers dominate the landscape. Come to admire the Gravières' forest in Lanobre or the region of Condat, just beyond Artense and Cézallier, in the majestic forest of Maubert. In this deep forest stands a giant of 141ft (43m) that is worth a visit. It is the 200-year-old king of the Maubert, with its imposing 123 inches (308cm) in circumference. Unfortunately, visitors will not see the queen of the Maubert because her life came to an end in 1899!
