The Sumène-Artense Region
…to Gentiane Region.

Just one step from the borders of Sumène-Artense to the borders of Gentiane by either going through the villages in the south of Bort-les-Orgues, where one will discover the most beautiful Romanesque churches of High Auvergne, your steps will lead you to Riom-ès-Montagne. Here, as a well-earned rest, one will be able to appreciate the flavour and the freshness of a glass of gentian bitters.

The Romanesque heritage - The most beautiful buildings of the Romanesque art of Auvergne are located in the small Sumène-Artense villages. These churches and chapels are listed historical buildings, characterised by their refined and rugged lines. In Ydes, in the canton of Saignes, the Saint-Georges' church, erected by the Templars, is a remarkable example of this architectural style. By following the guided tour of the illuminated churches proposed by the Union of Communes of the Sumène-Artense, visitors will discover, after dark, these magnificent places full of history.

The way to go - A good way to follow is certainly the one that leads you to the heart of this region where beeches and conifers dominate the landscape. Come to admire the Gravières' forest in Lanobre or the region of Condat, just beyond Artense and Cézallier, in the majestic forest of Maubert. In this deep forest stands a giant of 141ft (43m) that is worth a visit. It is the 200-year-old king of the Maubert, with its imposing 123 inches (308cm) in circumference. Unfortunately, visitors will not see the queen of the Maubert because her life came to an end in 1899!

A fishing stay in Sumène-Artense -
Numerous tributaries of the Dordogne river are quite full of fish (trout, minnows, loaches and godgeans). One of the most beautiful fishing spots, in the heart of Artense. Adapted for fly fishing, coarse fishing and "Toc" fishing (a kind of trolling), the numerous rivers and water stretches of the region where you are invited to practice your favourite sport, will give you an unforgettable fishing pleasure.

The gentian, more than an aperitif -
It is not a stroke of luck if the territories that have Riom-ès-Montagne in their hearts are united under the name of "Pays Gentiane". On the high pasturelands and in the lowlands, it is the flower that bears the same name that gives this yellow colour to the landscape. The gentian's roots are well known and in all "cafés", visitors can find a bottle of Salers or Avèze (2 kinds of gentian-flavoured liqueurs). Gentian is an aperitif drink with a bitter taste but it also has digestive and medical properties renowned since ancient times.
